TAUPO COMPENSATION BILL LANDOWNERS PROTECTED (P.R.) WELLINGTON. Sept 19. The artificial raising of the level of Lake l'aupo for water conservation purposes has involved claims for compensation from property owners and .the House of Representatives last nignt discussed the Lake Taupo Compensation Claims Bill, which fixes the basis on which a special Court will decide the amounts of compensation. _ It was explained by the Minister oi Works. Mr R. Semple, in moving the second reading, that the level oi Lake Taupo was raised by sft, which involved damage to land and homes fronting the lake. The State was compelled in the interests of the nation to impound additional water, everfy foot of the increased height being equal to 22.j00.U00 units of addtional power winch could be generated. If the control work had not been done the North Island would have been in a more severe plight through the powei shortage last summer. “The Opposition is prepared to give this bill its blessing," stated Mr. i.
