‘SOCIALIST UTOPIA’

N.Z. HELP PRAISED BRITISH AND U.S. PRESSMEN AUSTRALIA CRITICISED (.9 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. The World's Press News to-day publishes an article criticising the official arrangements in Australia for a party of British and American journalists who accompanied Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten during his recent tour. The article criticises the transport and accommodation arrangements in Australia, and says: “The background of the treatment is understood to be that a member of the Cabinet concerned has an anti-press phobia which finds expression against both local and visiting correspondents.” The article says that, in contrast, the New Zealand Government sent a special plane to Sydney for the party. A member of the Cabinet met them on arrival and arranged a two hours’ talk with Mr. Fraser. A member of the Cabinet was deputed to accompany the journalists wherever they went to see that their wants were met. They were not called on to spend a penny, and had the best accommodation and treatment during their visit and were present at all official functions. The result was that glowing stories were sent to the United States and Britain about this “Socialist Utopia.”
