SECURITY ACT
REPEAL IN DECEMBER AUSTRALIAN DECISION NEW CONTROLS PLANNED [(10 a.m.) CANBERRA, April 3. The Australian Cabinet decided to end the National Security Act on December 31 this year, but before that date legislation will be introduced to control prices, rents, interest and intiinflationary controls generally. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, said the decision was made on the recommendation of the Attorney-General, Dr. Evatt, to remove the uncertainty and indefiniteness as to the end of the Act. On legal view accepted by the ilMenzies, Fadden and Curtain Governments the Act would not terminate ;until probably six months after the j final treaties of peace were signed with Germany, Italy, and Japan. This period ■might, however, be prolonged almost and the Cabinet had de'cided that December 31 should be fixed 'as the terminal point of the Act. The end of the Act would mean that all the network of regulations built up throughout the war would no longer have legality. The Commonwealth would again be limited to the functions defined in the constitution, without power to overrule States on matters that came within the constitutional purview of the States.
