“VERY UGLY AFFAIR”

NEARLY A RIOT AUCKLAND DISTURBANCE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 4. “It was a very ugly affair and might easily have developed into a serious riot,” said Sub-Inspector Daly in the Police Court this morning when five men who were arrested at the weekend following a disturbance at _ an amusement park on Saturday night came before the magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levicn. Sub-Inspector Daly said the trouble started when the police arrived at the park after a fight had been broken up and the contestants taken away by friends. When a constable tried to arrest an airman he was struck by a Maori and a large crowd gathered, preventing the arrest of the airman. In the trouble Sergeant Coutts had his hand badly bitten. Several of the men concerned were not arrested until yesterday. One Maori was given a sentence of two months in gaol for assaulting a constable and two months for resisting arrest, the terms to be cumulative. Another was given three months’ gaol for obstructing a constable, a third given six weeks for inciting lawlessness, and a fourth given six weeks for obstructing the police. In addition, a young European was sentenced to one month in gaol for obstructing the police.
