SOCIAL DEMOCRATS

PARTY IN GERMANY LEADER OUTLINES POLICY (.9 a.m.) LONDON.. March 4. “It is impossible for the Social Democrat. Party in the British. American and French zones to unite with the Communist Party,” Dr. Karl Schumacher, leader of the Social Democrats in the British zone, told a meeting of 9000 Germans as Iserlohn. He added that Germany saw enough of the one-party system under the Nazis. The Communists in Germany were not free. The Social Democrats would work with them, but not at the cost of their identity. Dr. Schumacher, commenting on the French proposals for the internationalisation of the Ruhr, declared: “Whatever happens, the Ruhr must remain German.” He added a plea for the Allies to send more food to Germany to avert starvation.
