FINES FOR BOOKMAKING

(P.A.) NELSON. Jan. 19. Pleading guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Motueka, Harold Keith Karsten was fined £IOO in the Magistrate's Court. Detective-Sergeant T. Murray said the evidence indicated that the defendant was only in a small way. Karsten was fined £75 last June for a similar offence. Daniel Young, who also pleaded guilty to bookmaking, was lined £SO. The detective-sergeant said a coun try farmer placed £5 worth of bets with the defendant. Two horses won, earning £25 in dividends, but when tlie farmer called to collect the defendant said he had lost his slip and refunded £5. The farmer had complained about the position.
