ONLY MAKING INQUIRIES

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 18. In connection with the Auckland report of the intended introduction of a 40-hour week for railwaymen, the general manager of railways, Mr. J. Sawers, stated last night that all that had been done was simply to make inquiries as to whether a _ five-day 40hour week would be possible with the staff at the department’s disposal. “It is quite wrong to assume that we can have a five-day week with the staff we have available,” said Mr. Sawers. “With 25,000 men affected, it is impossible to say at five minutes’ notice what can or cannot be done.”
