RELEASE DEMANDED WATERSIDE SYMPATHY PRESSURE ON COUNCIL (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 17. “In view of the continued incarceration of military defaulters, the union has asked the Auckland Trades Council and Labour Representation Committee to set up a deputation to wait on the Minister of National Service, Mr. A. McLagan, and demand the immediate release of these men,” said the president of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr. H. Barnes. “The members of the union feel strongly about the matter.” continued Mr. Barnes, “in view of the fact that the war has been over for five months. Individuals like Oswald Mosley are free to preach their doctrines, and it is long since Captain Ramsay, who was detained in England under the Defence Regulations, was welcomed back with cheers into the House of Commons. “The union has asked the Trades Council to conduct a one-day strike each week until all the men are released if no satisfaction is given to the deputation,” said Mr. Barnes, outlining a resolution passed at a stopwork meeting of the union.
