POLICY UPHELD

IMPORT SELECTION

MR. COLEMAN’S VIEWS

“COAL UNOBTAINABLE” (P.R.) WELLINGTON. July 7. Countering Opposition criticism of the Government's policy of import selection, Mr. D. W. Coleman (Govt., Gisborne). in the Address-in-Reply debate, asked if there could be full employment for our own people if the door were open for all imports. But, he added, there was an agreement with Britain. We would buy from her to the same extent as we sold our products in that market. Air. Coleman declared, amid laughter. that the reason why people could not obtain coal, now was that coal was unobtainable. He explained that there were ho importations from Australia and an increased consumption in industry. Under a previous Government there was plenty of coal in the bins, but it was unobtainable by the people because they had no money to pay for it. The Opposition promised that, if it became the Government, it would leave people alone. The people would, lie suggested, be. exploited.
