MANX REJOICINGS

ROYAL VISITORS FETED KING MEETS TYNWALD (9 a.m.) LONDON, July 0. A Manx choir on Thursday night gathered on the lawn at the Isle of Man Government House and serenaded the King and Queen with old Manx songs. The King and Queen came out and stood in the mist to hear the singing and then sent for the conductor. The choir ran across the grounds and surrounded Their Majesties.

It was a night of rejoicing on the island. Their Majesties’ health was drunk after the King had turned on the victory brew at the island brewery. The King presided over the Tynwald, the ancient Manx open-air Parliament on Tynwald Hill. The King said: “Never before has the King of England been present at this interesting ceremony. It is of particular satisfaction to me that the occasion is the first Tynwald day following the end of the war in Europe. In bringing this gigantic conflict to a victorious conclusion the people of this little island have played a part by land, sea and air. You are now faced with the task of rebuilding your prosperity. It is my heartfelt wish that, under God’s Providence, you may enjoy the blessings of peace.” The King then formally adjourned the Tynwald. The King and Queen arrived at Northolt aerodrome, near London, this afternoon an hour and 15 minutes after leaving the Isle of Man and motored to Windsor.
