“DESPICABLE LIBEL”

COMMENT ON LETTER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 6. “That letter was a most despicable libel’on the people who live in New Zealand,” declared the Government member for Dunedin West, Mr. P. G. Connolly, D. 5.0., when he referred .in the House of Representatives to-day to a letter published during the British election campaign by the Daily Mail signed by Miss L. E. Cooke, Marton, stating that New Zealand was in a tragic state. “Gestapo methods are here, not murder camps, but a good deal of the rest.” This letter, added Mr. Connolly, was obviously sent to discredit the Labour Government of New Zealand in the hope that it would assist the Conservatives in England. Another interesting feature of the British elections was that it was estimated that only two out of five of tiie men in the forces would be able to vote. “That is democracy, the new order they have been lighting for,” concluded Mr. Connolly, “and then think of the way all our boys were able to vote. (Opposition laughter.) Mr. J. T. Watts (Opp., Riccarton): Is it any business of ours what they do in England?
