FOUR MEN PUNISHED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 8. "In this instance the court has the painful duty of having to send to gaol men who have . served their . ountry,” said Mr. Justice Fair in the mpreme Court yesterday when sentencing Bernard Wliiting, aged 45. .homas Melville Petry, aged 29, Join. Xn\,mond Petry, aged 24, and Arthui -a'vies, aged 29, for thefts of motor .yi'es and other equipment from Ardmore air force station. All the ne.used were members of the ground stall'. Counsel said that Whiting served in ne last war and the other three all ,ad been overseas in this war ana .cere due lo go away again.. He said .he thefts were committed when the ..mi were under the influence oi iq uor. Describing the men's action as disgraceful, in that they had robbed ana crippled the force, His Honour sentenced Whiting and Thomas Petry tc, .2 months ’imprisonment and Davies and the younger Petry to 12 months _nd nine 'months' reformative detenion respectively.
