WOOL INTERESTS

SECRETARIAT TALKS CLOSER COOPERATION RESEARCH AND PUBLICITY (Special Correspondent.) ■’ (1 p.m.) LONDON, Doc. 5. The principal interest in wool circles this week .centred in the International Wool. Secretariat conference in London and in the possibilities that may result in closer co-operation between the United Kingdom and the wool-producing Dominions in all matters relating to the future of wool research and propaganda. The hope is expressed here that after the Dominion growers’ representatives have formulated their own plans in greater detail and after the present London conferences are completed further discussions may take place with the Yorkshire trade representatives, when it may be possible to consider the matters in great detail in light of Dominion intentions, il is understood that the Secretariat Executive’s chairman, during a recent visit to Bradford, acquainted himself with the general ideas of" trade here on various aspects of wool research and publicity, and it is believed that the London conferences'will, amongst other things, explore the possibilities of complete collaboration between the United Kingdom and the Dominions in various spheres of wool promotion. The general feelings '.among the traders here is that the’British woolconsuming trades and , the Empire wool-producers have almost everyhing in common on this question. Not only is greater co-drdination rearded as necessary to avoid duplicaiion of efforts but also in the interests i completeness of effort. Synthetic Fibre Industry It is pointed out, for example, that he synthetic fibre industry is contracted in a way which gives complete continuity from raw material to . ae finished product and it is suggest’d that the wool producers and mam; iacturers need to combine to secure ■ similar continuity as applied to research and the promotion of work. Developments possible in the com■■g weeks are awaited With considerable interest by the British manufacturers as well as the Dominion woolgrowers. Meanwhile there is evidence that Britain is encouraging extended use of wool in-civilian production as far as war exigencies permit. Further substantial allocations of civilian wool cloth are announced for export to Canada and the manufacturers here are informed that they may apply for additional wool rations for the home trade if their existing rations are insufficient to maintain employment amongst available operatives. It is stipulated that- any additional wool so released must be used only in utility cloths for the home market for which the authorities are calling for increased production. Government cloths which have first priority in production are completely outside the wool rationing procedure and the latter applies only lo home and export civilian trade. -
