CLAUSE STRUCK OUT
STATUTES AMENDMENT RECOVERY OF HOUSES (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Dec. G. The extension to industry of the powers given in a clause in the Statutes Amendment Bill enabling the Railways Department to recover possession of its own houses was advocated in the House of Representatives yesterday by Opposition members when further consideration was given to the measure. After a discussion in the committee stages the clause was withdrawn. Mr. G. K. Mackley (Opp., Masterton), moved an amendment in the committee stages that similar provision should be extended to dwellings required by the owner for occupation of an employee, but the Prime Minister, the Put. Hon. P. Fraser, said the amendment could not possibly be accepted, for the simple reason that it was a direct attack on the Fair Rents Act. He would rather withdraw the clause than sacrifice thousands of families, which was the effect the amendment would have. After several more Opposition members had spoken the Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. 11. Mason, said he did not know that there war. any special urgency about the clause and the Prime Minister raid he was in favour •of withdrawing the clause and getting the whole matter reviewed. The clause was struck out.
