ASSEMBLY OPENED

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH LAYMAN AsTmODERATOR ;tP.A.) HASTINGS. Nov. 2. The general assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Now Zealand opened in Hastings last evening when the new Moderator, Mr. T. C. Brash, •was elected to office. In the history of the church in New Zealand, this is only the second occasion that a layman has held office. Tlie change of office was made during an impressive service in St. Andrew's Church in the presence of some 250 ministers and elders, and the service was relayed to St. Andrew’s Hall, which neld a crowded congregation. The service was conducted by the fit. Rev. D. C. Herron, of Dunedin, the retiring Moderator, who, following his address, received the nomination of Mr. Brash as his successor, and installed him in office. Mr. Brash concluded the service with his first official address. The theme adopted by Mr. Herron in his address was that o>: the unity of the churches. He made a stirring plea for not only unity in the Church but for unity among the churches. Such unity, he contended, would be the most convincing argument possible for the truth of the Church's message.
