DAMAGE TO ROADS
MILITARY VEHICLES “STATE RESPONSIBILITY” (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov._2. Acceptance by the Government of a greater measure of respom the repair of damage caused to roads by military traffic is wanted by the Municipal Association. At its conference yesterday the association adopted the following remits: “That the Government be approached on the matter of a subsidy for renewing roads damaged by military traffic. Payment on a basis of cost for the past three years is considered unfair, as most councils have not the men available to carry out extensive repair work and consequently maintenance costs are very low.” “‘That representations be made to the Public Works Department for reimbursement of the additional expenditure incurred by local authorities in respect of patent and latent damage to roads due to the abnormally heavy traffic of army vehicles using the roads.” “That, as the Crown is not liable for the payment of heavy traffic lees, and under the Municipal Corporations ■\et 193.2. a council mav recover from private individuals extraordinary ex---p-'>s mcu’Ted i" renpoong a street damaged by extraordinary traffic (hereon, it is’ submitted that the army should accept a similar liability.”
