MUSICAL UPLIFT

COMBINED CHOIR WORK To the many people who feel that Gisborne has been starved for good choral music in recent years, and who hark back to earlier days when two choral societies in the town were supported by a fine orchestral society of between 40 and 50 members, the union of church choirs holds, out the promise of a welcome uplift in musical appreciation in the community. The combined choirs presented a service of music at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. E. M. Enright presiding, and members of the Anglican. Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian choirs participating. Mr. James Cb'isn conducted the choral items, and Misses M. Skillen and L. Brook were the organists. Outstanding among the choral items was the grand chorus. “Thanks Be to God.” from the Mendelssohn oratorio, “Elijah.” Several supporting vocal and instrumental solos were given and were keenly enjoyed. It. is expected that, when peace comes, the combined choirs should be of great assistance in leading the musical celebration of that long-looked-for event.
