COST OF THE WAR

AUSTRALIAN FIGURES SYDNEY, Oct. 30 • Australia will have spent more than £2,160,000,000 op the war by the end of next June according to the Budget estimates. This is more than eight times as much as she spent on the last war. The official figures, just released, disclose that Australia by June 30 of this year had spent £1,654,000,000 directly on the war—3o per cent of the total national income since 1938/9. In 1943-44 the war cost £545,133,000—42 per cent of the national income, or nearly £73 per head on direct war expenditure. This is more than twice as much as the last war cost Australia, when the annual wartime expenditure reached its peak at £8,000,000 in 1918/19. .
