MAJOR PORT WORKS

TWO TURKISH HARBOURS BRITISH CONSTRUCTION (10 a.m.) LONDON, March 23. Britain is rebuilding the ports of Alexandretta and Mersin in southern Turkey under contract between the Turkish Government and the United Kingdom Commercial Corporation. These ports are connected by rail with Aleppo and are thus linked with important centres of Beirut, Haifa, Port Said, Alexandria and also with the railway passing through Mosul, Baghdad and Basra to the Persian Gulf. A deep-water pier, which is being constructed at Alexandretta, will be a quarter of a mile long, capable of berthing large ocean-going vessels. A pier is being constructed at Mersin to handle-1000 tons of merchandise daily. Other harbour improvements am being made at both ports.
