BOBBY CALVES AND FRUIT
MINISTER’S ALLEGATION
(P.R.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. A “black market”' has been operating in connection with the sale of bobby calves, stated the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon.' J. G. Barclay, when moving in the House to-day the second reading of a measure confirming certain regulations administered by the Department of. Agriculture, i The bill, he said, would tighten up the former regulations relating to the sale of bobby calves, because some “black marketing” was going on in an effort to undermine the system. In .other countries it would be treated with severe penalties. In the Old Country, for instance, offenders could be gaoled. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, referring to another set of regulations which were being confirmed, said that thev related to control over the sales of apples. and pears. He urged that as a minimum freight was quoted for the transport of up to five cases, the regulations governing private sales should permit 'five instead of two cases to be retailed. ..., , Mr. Barclay: It helps the ‘black marketing” that is going on.
