SOVIET SUCCESSES

NORTH AND SOUTH INITIATIVE RETAINED HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES (By Teiograpn—Press Assn.—-Copyright.) (11 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27. According to the Moscow radio, the Germans in the Sinyavino area in the past few days lost 100 tanks and 8000 men. The Germans are hurling in large reserves in an effort to check the Russian offensive in this area. The Germans violently attacked near Sinyavino, but, the Russians report that the lines, they gained earlier in the month are intact. : There are ntf indications that the Leningrad’garrison already established across the -Neva has received further support. .Messages from Stockholm report , important Russian progress from Leningrad through the Polkova district. General von Leeb apparently realises the danger of the Leningrad blockade being broken. At least one infantry division was hastily transferred from the west. The Russians are steadily improving the positions in Karelia. The Finns have been displaced from another important stronghold after suffering 300 casualties. The Russians continue to make headway on the central front, despite strong resistance. One unit in the past 10 days recaptured.thr.ee villages find killed more than 2000 Germans. In the Mosdok area, an enemy attack was repelled, while south-east of: Novorossisk a Soviet marine unit wiped out a Rumanian infantry battalion.

, Near Mosdok two enemy infantry regiments, supported by 60 tanks, were checked with heavy German losses by a Russian counter-attack, nine tanks being destroyed and two infantry companies being wiped out.

South-east of Novorossisk, stubborn fighting took place for one height. Three hundred enemy officers and men were killed and much booty captured. Soviet artillery routed one enemy company who attempted to drive a wedge into the Russian defence lines. The Moscow radio says that the Russians at Mosdok are taking advantage of dense fogs for regrouping and surprise attacks. A Russian submarine attacked a Rumanian convoy in the Black Sea and sank the destroyer Marasesti. The Moscow radio records a success on the front north of Voronej, where, on one sector, the Russians pushed forward and penetrated the forest. At many points on the Voronej front, including the western bank of the Don, south of the city, the Germans are constantly unsuccessfully counterattacking.
