Cuthbert is returning to Waipukurau on Saturday after visiting Mrs. T. Alston Coleman, Hinaki street. Gunner P. P. Sherrill is spending his leave with his parents, Mr. ami Mrs. A. D. Sherrill, Waikohu. Mr. T. Seymour, who lias been visiting relatives in Gisborne and on the East Coast, has returned to South Australia. Mr. and Mrs. R. Allwood have returned to Whatatutu after visiting Longburn, Paekakariki, and Wellington. Miss N. Parker, Cook street, who has been staying with Mrs. E. F. Harvie, Dunedin, is at present the guest of Mrs. A. S. Parker, Dannevirke. ENGAGEMENT Smith—Downs.—An engagement is announced between Thomas Clive, second son of Mrs. M. .Latvford Smith, Gisborne, and Mr. W. A. Smith, Whakatane, and Ann Rosemary, elder daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Downs, Pahiatua. TARUHEKU RADIES’ SOCIAL CLUB Progressive five-hundred was enjoyed at seven tables at the fortnightly card party sponsored by the Taruheru Ladies’ Social Glut at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. i’.iggar, Cameron road, on Tuesday night. Honours were secured by Mrs. Hollier and Mr. Ucasiip, and other prize-winners were Mr.!. F. E. Cameron and Mr. J. Davis. The games were supervised by Mr. Biggar, and Mr. J. Davis supplied the music for the dame which followed the serving of supper. ST. JOHN’S LADIES’ GUILD There was a particularly large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of St. John’s, Anglican Ladies’ Guild, held in St. John’s Church, Mangapnpa, on Tuesday afternoon. Business was transacted under the direction of Mrs. A. V. Clare, who asked the members to assist in providing the supper at the annual meeting of St. John’s Church, which would take place next Tuesday. An interesting competition was won by Mrs. Shelton, and Mrs. Steed also was awarded a prize. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Elliott and Miss C. Watkins. PATRIOTIC FUNDS BENEFIT Gratifying success attended the all-day programme conducted by the Poverty Bay Ladies’ Golf Club at the Awapuni links on Tuesday for the benefit of the patriotic funds. An L.G.U. medal round engaged the attention of the members in the morning, when Mrs. W. D. Morley emerged tile winner with a score of 77 net, Mrs. H. B. Tyermnn securing second place with 78 net. After luncheon, which was served in the club-house, a Canadian foursome, over 12 biles, figured on the programme, the best card being returned by Miss M. Newman, partnered by Mrs. R. Hansen. As a result of the fixture, together witli other donations, £lO 10s has been handed to the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council. WOMEN’S NATIONAL RESERVE Sympathic reference was made to the death of Mrs. T. A. Crawford, a past valued member, at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Women's National Reserve, held in the Parish Hail, on Tuesday afternoon, ,aud a vote of sympathy with her relatives was carried, members standing in silence. Mrs. W. E. Gofi’e presided over a good attendance. It was announced that owing to unavoidable circumstances the "bring and buy" arranged for last Friday had been postponed until August Li. Arrangements were made for the disposal of the doll presented' to the branch by Mrs. C. A. Hewitson, for the benefit of its funds. Anomalies in connection with ration cards were discussed, and it was agreed that the reserve would assist, time permitting, in their remedy. Other local matters also came up for discussion, but it was found necessary to seek further information before making a move. At the close of the meet ing the members adjourned to "The Burlington” for afternoon tea.
