ROTORUA DILEMMA
ONE UNDERTAKER LEFT An unusual problem faced the Rotorua Borough Council when it' was reported that should an appeal against military service of an employee of the only undertaking firm in Rotorua be not granted the firm would have to close that', part of the business and leave the district without an undertaker within at least 60 miles. The attention of the council was drawn to the matter by the medical officer of health at Hamilton. The medical officer stated that the mail concerned was the only coffinmaker that the firm had left and also the only man experienced in sealing down where metal linings were necessary. The firm also manufactured furniture, but if an employee for whom an appeal had been lodged was called into camp the' undertaking part of the business would have to be closed. It was pointed out that under the Health Act it is incumbent upoii the council to bury the dead When called upon to do so by a medical officer of health, and that if no undertaker was available the council would be in difficulties. After discussing the matter, and assured that efforts had unsuccessfully been made to secure another suitable employee, the council decided to support the appeal.
