SINGAPORE ALERT
: POSSIBLE ATTACK! SCOUTING ACTIVITY JAP. PLANES OF WAR 1 (Elec. Tel, Copyright—United Press Assn. (Reed. Dec. 10, 2.10 p.m.) SINGAPORE, Dec. 9. £ An announcement that aerial activ 1 ity over Singapore last night and thi: 1 morning was mainly reconnaissanci 5 leads to the belief that the city maj undergo very serious bombing in the I next few days. Informed circles consider it likeLv i that Japanese bombers have already : left Indo-China for southern Thailand , in which case the next raids against Singapore would be made with large bombers carrying the heaviest loads. Though Singapore is putting on a good face there is an undercurrent ol considerable anxiety. There are no public shelters. Only a few of the more modern buildings possess bombproof basements. The swampy nature of the island makes it impossible to construct deep shelters. If incendiary bombs are dropped very big fires are inevitable.
