CONSERVE PETROL
OPERATORS ADVISED MORE CO-ORDINATION A suggestion that operators in the Gisborne-East Coast area might well try by a closer form of co-ordination to conserve petrol to the last drop was offered by the Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. J. P. O. Skoglund, sitting in Gisborne yesterday. He pointed out that the new situation brought about by war with Japan undoubtedly would affect deliveries of petrol to New Zealand, and said he did not think it would be out of place to suggest that operators should get together, wipe but unprofitable mileage, and so anticipate what undoubtedly would be a necessary action on the part of the Government if the consumption of petrol continued at the present rate. The authority dealt with a number of applications for amendments to goods licenses, approving those applied for by J. W. Gordon, Mclntosh and Brooking, T. C. Nicol and Son, and Lane Bros. One application for an amendment was refused, and another was adjourned to the sitting in Te Puia, held to-day.
The application of M. C. Scragg for a new passenger license was approved. The authority further ratified the schedule of goods tariffs submitted by the operators, already approved by the Transport Department. In reply to an inquiry on behalf of certain operators, Mr. Skoglund indicated that the schedule must be adhered to by all carriers. All the licenses he had dealt with to date, in the matter of amendments, had been endorsed to that effect, and in due course the endorsement would be added to the balance of licenses in existence. Whether or not the endorsement was there, however, the schedule must >
adhered to. Otherwise the operator would be committing a breach of the regulations.
