GATHERING FORCES
SECOND PHASE COMING
(Reed. Dee. 9, 9 a.m.) • TOBRUK,-Dec. 4
The New Zealand troops continue to fight with Tommies, Australians and Poles outside the widened perimeter of the Tobruk defences. At the moment there is no intensive fighting on any sector. After a fortnight of terrific fighting both sides are reorganising and gathering together their scattered forces in preparation for the second phase of this grim Libyan campaign.
Rain which drove in from the Mediterranean has stopped. The wind has changed to the south and it blows in cold blasts across the desert towards the sea, bringing with it dust storms. This will complicate the • work of patrols,, for visibility across the desert is negligible. Artillery and machinegun observation posts will not be able to function with accuracy and certainty until the dust storms have cleared. Occasionally the guns of the Tobruk defences bark and are replied to by Hun guns outside the perimeter, but the noise of the main battle which raged for days south-east of Tobruk cannot be heard.
