SUPPORT FOR RUSSIA
GISBORNE RESOLUTION TRADE RELATIONS URGED At a recent meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Russian Relations Society, the following motion, moved by the chairman, Mr. J. H. Hall, was carried enthusiastically:— “That this meeting of Gisborne citizens pledges itself to do everything in its power to help our gallant ally, Soviet Russia, in its heroic struggle against the barbaric hordes of Nazi Germany. “This meeting, furthermore, will support the New Zealand Government in giving its utmost aid to the Soviet, and earnestly desires to see the setting-up of trade and, also, diplomatic relations with the Soviet Government.”
Several speakers,,.including Messrs. W. Harrison, P. G. Hansen and V/. E. Appleby, following an impressive opening address by the chairman, made helpful contributions towards the realisation of the objects of the society, and Mr. Roy Stanley, national secretary of the Carpenters’ Union, touched upon many aspects of the position in New Zealand and elsewhere, covering a wide field of world affairs to the keen interest and enlightenment of an appreciative audience.
A collection on behalf of'the Russian ambulance fund amounted to £5 10s 3d, and, at the close of the meeting, a number of new members joined the society.
During the evening, at the invitation of the chairman, all present stood for a few moments out of respect dor those who had fallen in the struggle against Nazism.
