SCHOOL PATROLS

FORTY DISTRICT BOYS GATHERING IN GISBORNE For the purpose of further increasing their effectiveness, 40 school safety patrols from eight schools in Gisborne and the district gathered in the Cosmopolitan Club's social hall on Saturday, when they were- shown the Automobile Association’s roact safety film, “Safe Ways.” Afterwards they v ere entertained at lunch and then treated to a programme in one of the picture theatres. The film the Automobile Association is showing to children throughout its territory explains how children may avoid being involved in rose accidents, and during last week’s tour of the East Coast district was shown to children of 36 schools. Saturday’s screening in Gisborne was attended by the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, who briefly addressed the ch. dren. after being introduced by Mr. F. Toler ton, chairman of the Gisborne advisory committee. Mr. H. W. Bullock, vice-president of the Automobile Association, and Mr. T. G. Nowell, traffic inspector for the borough. also spoke a few words, while Mr. S. Ringer, the association's child safety instructor, gave the commcntarv during tiie screening of the film. Mr. Ringer explained afterwards that the association’s system of issuing certificates of fitness .for bicycles had been a great success. The certificates were issued only when a bicycle was in} perfect condition, and this had been responsible for the necessary improvements being effected to a large number of school bicycles.
