TUSSOCK DANGER
NASELLA VARIETY
FARMERS’ UNION FEAR
The possibility of nasella tussock becoming a danger in the Gisborne district was discussed at a meeting of the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon, when it was suggested that farmers should be on their guard against its appearance.
Mr. E. U. Richardson drew attention to reports regarding the spreading of nasella tussock in the South Island and urged that farmers should be on their guard in this district.
It was suggested that the union should ask the Department of Agriculture to acquaint the farmers of the danger to this district, if any danger existed, and possibly to secure samples so that farmers would recognise the grass if it appeared. The president, Mr. J. E. Benson, reported that since the executive took up the attitude that Saturday shearing should be permitted he had discovered that it was possible for shearing to go on until 4 p.m. if the shearers had not worked 48 hours during the week. Members expressed themselves as perfectly satisfied with that position.
Messrs. Benson and Veitch were deputed to inquire into a complaint that a truck licensed to carry pigs to Gisborne was no longer on the road and that a man willing to do the work was unable to secure a license.
The committee agreed to go into the question of providing water for stock on the Coast road, the president stating that at present there was no water from Tolaga Bay to Pouawa, A motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Messrs. T. Holden and G. D. Jobson, whom the president said were both staunch members of the Farmers’ Union.
It was agreed that the December meeting be abandoned. Those present at the meeting were Messrs. J. E. Benson, president. E. U. Richardson, G. S. Bridge, W. E. Honey, G. Brown. F. C. Charteris and W. T. Veitch.
