SALE AT MATAWHERO SMALL STORE YARDING SHARP RISE IN BEEF Values for store sheep at the Matawhero stock sale to-day remained firm generally. The yarding was the smallest of the year, and totalled only 1200, the selling being completed before lunch. The attendance of buyers was good, with Bay of Plenty representation. Hoggets comprised 75 per cent of the offering, but there was little of goed quality. For wether hoggets, prices ranged from 14s 4d for medium sorts to 19s 2d for a small line of well-grown sorts. Ewe hoggets were strongly competed for at 22s 7d to 2Gs 3d for the more attractive ones and at 17s 9d for small. Neither of the two pens of wethers offered was sold under the hammer, the highest bid being 235, or Is below the vendor’s reserve. A pen cf breeding ewes close to lambing, mixed in ages, was passed in at 15s 3d. Store Sheep Prices Wether Hoggets.—Seventy-nine, fair size and condition, 17s 2d; 139, medium size, very fair order, 15s 9d; IS, well grown, good order, 19s 2d; 114, fair size, good order, 17s 2d ; 56, medium Bize, fair order, 14s 4d; 137, fairly well grown, very fair order, 18s; 23, ' very fair size and emidition, 18s. Ewe Hoggets.—Eighteen. mostly well grown, good order, 26s 3d; 120, fair size and condition, 22s 7d; 137, fairly well grown, good order, 23s Sd; 42, small to medium, very fair order, 17s 9d. Wethers.—Sixty-four, mostly good size and condition, (p) 235; 54. good size and condition, (p) 22s 6d. Breeding Ewes, —Forty-three, a few 6 and 8-tooth, the rest older, fair frames, r.w. S.D. rams, (p) 15s 3d. Fat Sheep Firm The fat sheep market attracted a small yarding of 150 ewes, including some sheep of good quality. The market was firm. Three pens sold from 13s Id to 13s 7d and the rest from 11s Id to 11s Bd, with a second grade pen at 11s 2d. Prices: — Ewes.—Sixteen, 11s 2d, 11, 11s Id; 20, 13s Id, 20, 11s 2d; 24, (p) 10s 6d; 20. (p) Us 4d; 20, 11s 8d; 18, up to 5-year, from Mr. J. E. Benson. 13s 4d; 15. from Mr. Rutene Jones. 13s 7d. Second quality: Five. 11s 2d. Beef Values Rise A sharp rise took place in beef values. The yarding, a small one, comprised dairy sorts, and values were from 10s to 15s a head up on recent rates. The highest price was £B, with others selling from £4 to above £7. Big Yarding of Pigs The yarding of pigs was a large one, comprising about 100 of all types. The market was somewhat dragging, except for porkers, , which me a sound demand. Prices ranged as follows: —Small weaners, (s; good weaners, 15s to 20s; slips. 21s to 245; stores. 31s to 335; porkers, 35s to £2 6s. High Dairy Average A high average price in the sale of a dairy herd by Messrs. Common, Shelton and Company, Limited, on account of Mrs. M. Pend-l-eigh was Becured at the Matawhero yards yesterday. The 57 dairy cows and heifers were all sold at an average price of £lO ss, the cows ranging fiom £7 to £ls 5s and the springing heifers from £8 10s to £l3 15s. The cows were tested with records up to 4001 b., and the productions were announced at the sale. The average price is probably the highest for cows and heifers as a herd sold in the district for many years.
