EXCELLENT CROP

WELL ABOVE AVERAGE LAST SEASON’S MAIZE YIELD UP TO 85 BUSHELS Further reports regarding the maize •'rop harvested in the Gisborne district recently confirm earlier indications that it is one of the best from all points of view secured here for many years. It was grown on one of the largest areas, the yield per acre was well above the average, and the total quantity harvested is expected to approach the record year of 15 .years ago. while in addition the quality is excellent. At a meeting of maize growers held during the week, when the past seasons crop was under discussion, those present agreed that the crops should yield about 15 bushels to the acre above the district average. For some years there has been a little controversy regarding the average maize crop for the district, figures such as 75 and even 80 bushels to the acre being mentioned. A few years ago, however, a survey was made over the whole district, covering several seasons’ crops, and from the results it was thought it would be sounder to place the general average at 70 bushels to the acre, while some crops considerably exceeded 100 bushels, lighter ones on country that was not so fertile as most in the district brought the average down. Few shelling results are available vet. and the estimate that the yield will be 15 bushels over the average can be only assumption, but from a survey of the district crops this figure ;hculd ’ not be far from the actual result. If it proves correct, the district will have an average yield of ,5 bushels to the acre, a satisfactory result, particularly as the quality of the grain is excellent, also, while there is an added satisfaction that the price for the grain is assured at a reasonable return.
