MATAWAI NEWS

NATIONAL PARTY MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) There was an attendance of 40 members at the annual meeting of the Matawai branch of the National Party on Saturday evening. Messrs. M. J. Short and E. C. East, Opotiki. attended to address the meeting, and the Otoko and Rakauroa branches also were represented. Mr. John Hope, who occupied the chair, reported on the year's inactivity, explaining that at such a stage it was not advisable to take part in parly politics but to assist in winning the war and to discard anything which would tend to evoke party feeling, at least until the return of the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, to the Dominion. At the election of officers, Mr. Hope was elected chairman and Mr. J. Davenport secretary, both appointments being by unanimous vote, and the present: committee was re-elected with power to add to their number, four members having left the district. Messrs. Short and East both addressed the meeting. Mr. Short apologising for the absence of Mrs. Wilson and congratulating Matawai on being the first branch to hold its annual meeting. One point exercising the minds of members was that no election should take place in the electorate. Mr. East stressed the necessity of everyone being on the roll. Congratulations were extended to Mr. H. J. F. Tombleson on the interest he had taken in the land policy, and Mr. Short paid a tribute to his work in this direction.

A shoulder injury was suffered by Mi’. Bruce Clark yesterday, when he was thrown from his horse while on his way to Whakarau. On Saturday afternoon a team of ladies from Rakauroa visited Matawai. Two friendly games of basketball were both won by Matawai. The visitors were entertained to afternoon lea in the Women’s Institute Hall.
