FACTOR IN VICTORY GEN. SMUTS’ OPINION (Reed. Aug. 11, 11 a.m.) JOHANNESBERG, Aug. 10. The Prime Minister of South Africa, Field-Marshal J. C. Smuts, stated that South Africa began the war with one air squadron and it now had 15. The air force numbered at least 25,000 men and women and aimed to have 50,000. “Many people think the continent of Europe must be invaded,” he added. “I think the invasion has already begun by air. lam not sure that invasion by land forces will be necessary. I have no doubt that aviation will be a decisive instrument of victory.” .
