Russian Soldiers
Sir, —In congratulating you on your very fair report of the meeting in the City Hall, may I point out a slight error in reporting? “The Soviet leaders have done away with the old ideas and the members of the forces were told the reason why they were to do and die." Mr. Watson had been explaining the functions of the political commissars and the reasons for the seemingly fanatical fighting of the Russians. He stated that whereas in capitalist countries the old idea prevailed that the soldier was “not to reason why but instead to do and die,” that was not the case in Russia, where the soldier was given a thorough schooling in politics and political economy which enabled him to ascertain the real causes of war so that ii ihe' event of attack he would know he was lighting for his country in which lie had a direct personal share. VERITAS.
