PAY NOT SENT
NEW ZEALAND AIRMEN TRAINEES IN CANADA When the first pay-day since leaving New Zealand came round and no money was forthcoming, a batch of Dominion pilots training in Canada would have found themselves in a position of acute financial embarrassment had it not been for the generosity of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Eagerly anticipating his pay on the following day, Leading-Aircraftman I, H. Duff wrote to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. Duff, New Plymouth; “Payday to-morrow —we spent our last 25 cents on cigarettes this afternoon. All I have left is a Fijian penny and the penny you threw to me as we were leaving.” Four days later, however, he wrote: “We didn’t get paid. According to the accountancy branch here, our brilliant Government has not sent any money to pay us. Also, thanks to the generosity of the Royal Canadian Air Force authorities, We were given 10 dollars to carry on. with, which was very much appreciated by the boys, particularly as we realise it probably means much upsetting of the Royal Canadian Air Force records.”
