FALSE STATEMENT
SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT AUCKLAND MAN FINED £6O (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Pleading guilty to three charges of making false statements, thereby obtaining social security benefits totalling £57, William Richard Chaplin, appearing on summons in the Police Court to-day, was fined £6O on one charge and convicted and discharged on the other two charges. The police said that Chaplin, aged 58, was a blacksmith, but he did not work at his trade. He did not disclose that his wife was working. Defending counsel said that Chaplin had brought up eight children and one was still dependent on him. He had been in indifferent health for several years and when two sons left for the war found it difficult to keep his home going. Chaplin said that he did not know that he had to declare his wife’s income.
The magistrate directed Chaplin to pay the fine at the rate of £1 a week.
