PATUTAHI UNIT

NIGHT PATROL WORK, Since June last year, when 1 the Legion of Frontiersmen Auxiliary was formed in Gisborne, there has been a Patutahi unit, the men, who formed a separate platoon, travelling into •Gisborne at their own expense once n week to receive instruction. . *- , When the Home Guard was officially formed in the district some of these men joined the mounted section, . blit the remainder stayed in the inrahtfy of the Home Guard. The first parade was held 13 weeks ago, when 24 men enrolled and Mr. Seville was appointed commanding officer. Enrolments have been coming in well and tile number in the Guard now exceeds 50. This unit is now well forward 1 in elementary drill and also has done a course in map-reading and map-draw-ing.

Mr. A. McDiamid has taken several classes in semaphore signalling and the Guardsmen have , proved themselves both apt and interested. Last night almost a full muster took the field for night patrol work, which proved very interesting, the work being taken seriously and carried out in a very commendable manner. Several returned soldiers are among the men enrolled and these men are able to give some measure of instruction to those who have not served before in any military unit.
