SOLDIERS’ OFFENCE
SMASH-AND-GRAB RAID JEWELLER’S WINDOW DAMAGE TO BE PAID (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A smash-and-grab raid by two soldiers on the jewellery shop of J. B. Lauehlan, Limited, Willis street, led to their appearance in the Police Court to-day. They were Frederick Thomas West, aged 31, and George William Sheddon, aged 22. West was charged with committing mischief by wilfully damaging a plate glass display window valued at £2O and the theft of a hair brush worth 8s (id Sheddon was charged with stealing two hair brushes and a leather case, two brooches, a fountain pen, three strings of pearls, a pencil and a knife, two spoons'and two benzine cigarette lighters of a total value of £6 Gs. They pleaded guilty. It was stated that they were members of the first contingent of troops for overseas and the military authorities desired them. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., ordered tin men to be convicted and discharged. A guarantee was given that the £2O damage would be paid. James Leon Lewis, aged 24, a .jockey and a labourer, who was arrested with the other two, was charged with j stealing a cigarette lighter valued at 19s Gd belonging to J. B. Lauehlan, Limited.
He was remanded till Wednesday.
