In the New Zealand championship the two deciding games were between Severne and Gyles and Dunlop and Scott.
In the game between the first two Gyles played the Sicilian defence, lie developed his game very slowly, but managed to build up an attack which resulted in the winning of a pawn. Nervousness caused him to blunder towards the end and Severne obtained stalemate.
Scott employed the same defence against Dunlop as Gyles had against Severne, and came into the middle game with even prospects. An unsound sacrifice of material by Scott allowed Dunlop to force a win.
