SWORDFISH’S FIGHT
FOUR-HOUR STRUGGLE STEEL ROD SNAPPED After a four-hour fight, during which the launch was charged by the infuriated swordfish, a 7961 b. black marlin was landed on the deep-sea grounds off the Whangaroa Harbour by Mr. Mack Tindale, of Whangaroa. Not only is the fish the first to be caught this season, but it is also the heaviest secured since 1938. Mr. Tindale was fishing in the deep water between the Whangaroa Heads and the Cavelli Islands. The swordfish rose to take the bait at 10.30 a.m., and a magnificent battle, in which the marlin broached many times, followed. In its struggle for freedom it charged the 35ft. launch, leaping high from the water and shattering one of the cabin windows with a furious thrust of its tail.
Shortly after two o’clock the fight was nearing its end when the steel rod used by the angler snapped in two. Only prompt work by the boatman, Mr. Miles Anderson, in snatching the trace enabled the fish to be brought to the gaff 15 minutes later.
