CAULFIELD CUP

RIVETTE’S TRIUMPH BRILLIANT VICTORY PAMELUS WINS SPRINT RECORD ATTENDANCE (K)rc. Trl. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 23. 9 am.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 22. Aided by an advantage in weight, Rivetie brilliantly won the Caulfield Cup on Saturday. She carried 31b. overweight, but she has shown brilliant form since the declaration of the weights, and the handicapper would probably have awarded 8.7 if he had had the option of altering the imposts.

Rivettc made a modest beginning and proved difficult to train. She has been sparsely raced. Her dam, Riv, was a champion performer on the pony course and Rivette is little more than a pony.

The rider, E. Preston, was lucky to get the mount, as J. Purteli was engaged but he suffered a broken leg a few weeks back. Maikai had every chance, but was outstayed by the winner. Respirator was possibly unlucky. A slow beginning beat him. Geebung had a poor run. Elanage was never a possibility. David Spear surprised by his forward showing. Wilson went a fair race.

The weather, was fine and the attendance was 67,500, a record. Gold Salute returned his £245 purchase money when he outclassed his rivals in the first division of the Burwood Handicap. It was a good Derby trial. Muscari weakened. Riviera finished well. Aranui assisted the pace. Tire Manuere was never dangerous. There is a possibility of Gold Salute going to America next season if sufficient inducement is offered and the colt goes along all right.

The defeat of Border Lass was unlikely in the second division of the Burwood Handicap. The fast-finishing Mac Rob was second. Snow White was a good third. Philworth went a poor race.

Mormon finished strongly in the last stride to win the Gwyn Nursery from Hall Mark’s son, Goldsmith. Exactly was a moderate third. Broadcaster disappointed. The Adelaide representative, Lome, had an easy win in the steeples and should score again during his visit. Pasal was poorly placed early, but finished brilliantly in the first division of the Mona Nursery Handicap. Applause and Ten o’clock battled gamely. Friendly gave a poor display. The winner cost '27sgns. as a yearling., Partoor finished strongly to score an easy win in the second division of the Mona Nursery Handicap. Tranquil Star has had two seconds and a fourth in three starts.

Making a first appearance for some months, Pamelus had a surprise win in the Windsor Handicap. Caesar and Beechwood finished well. Amiable and Panka went fair races. Rivette is sure ,- to receive a 101 b. penalty for the Melbourne Cup, but her owner, Mr. H. Bamber, is confident that the mare can complete the double.

Sectional times in the Cup were:— First three furlongs, 38£sec.; next four, 501!sec.; last four furlongs, 50sec.; last mile, 1.403. Saturday's totalisator figures were £103,972, a Caulfield record. Results: —
