INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL SECOND TERM OPENING ELECTION OF COMMITTEE (Special to the Ilevatil.) NAPIER, this day. The question of the date for the opening of the Gisborne Intermediate School was discussed at a meeting of tlte Hawke's Bay Education Board yesterday, when, it was decided that the school should bo occupied at the beginning of the second term next year and that positions on the staff should be advertised now.
Advice from iiie Education Board regarding the approval of a grant for the provision of furniture for the Gisborne Intermediate School stated that the grant included £375 towards the cost of supplying tables and chairs instead of dual desks. Tb.e Minister of Education, the lion. P. Fraser, wrote approving of t lieboard's recommendations regarding the constitution of intermediate school committees. One member for each 100 punils or part of Hid pupils op the roll at April I shall be elected by Ihe Parents and one member ejected by the committee of each contributing school, the elections to be undertaken yearly. The committee, following its election, shall appoint a chairman, from its members. Training- College Students. The Education Department advised that the number of students to be admitted to the training college from the Hawke's Bay district during 1940 would be 51, and the students would bo required to attend the Wellington Training College, the applicants to be selected by a selection committee appointed by the board. A report on a meeting held in Tolaga Bay to discuss the acquisition of a new site for the Tolaga Bay School was submitted by Messrs. J. S. Wattchop, E. 11. Baker and T. A. Coleman, who reported that strong opposition was voiced by golfers and also some of the older residents to the proposal to take any portion of the domain for any purpose whatever. The board suggested that a proposed Hauiti site should be acquired, and failing that application should be made for a site for the residence and that provision for manual training centres should be made at Tc Karaka, Wairoa and Tokomaru Bay.
Advice was received from the Minister of Education that a grant for ground improvements at To I-lapara School had been approved.
Tokomaru Bay Extension
Replying to the board’s proposals to iextend the site of the Tokomaru Bay School by taking over an area of 2 roods .37 perches held by the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Frozen Meat and Mercantile Company, Limited, under lease from the Maori Land Board, the Education Department stated that in view of the present circumstances no action would be taken in the meantime. The board considered that the land was required, and the chairman, Mr. G. A. Maddison and Mr. E. 11. Baker were asked to make l'urthci representations. The Education Department wrote approving of rent for the use ol the Waercnga-o-kuri Hall during alterations to the school building. The department advised that owing to the limited amount of funds available for ground improvements in the Wairoa and Gisborne districts, only the most urgent cases would be dealt with. It was decided to urge Awapuni, Gisborne and Te Hapara schools for special consideration.
Following a request from the Matawai School Committee, it was decided to repaint the school. The Wairoa committee urged the board to acquire the police station section, and the board decided to make application to the department.
