The Federal Cabinet decided yesterday to reintroduce compulsory military training. Single men attaining 21 years of age during the year ending on June 30, 1940, are to be called up lor three months of continuous camp training in order to keep the militia strength up to 75,000. In making the announcement, the Prime Minister, Mr. it. (I. Menzies, emphasised that there was no intention to send militia soldiers abroad. Recruits were required to till the vacancies caused by militiamen volunteering for service at home or abroad in the Second Australian Imperial Force. Under the compulsory plan now adopted a new draft of men will be available each year to till such vacancies. The Cabinet also decided to increase the allowances to a married militiaman to 3s a day for his wife and Is for each, child. The previous rates were 2s (id and 9d. respectively. The new rales mean that a married man with two children received approximately the basic wage while in camp.
