Turf Club Spring Races

“Tailor-Mades” Predominate in Frocking

Although the weather was all that could be desired, there was only a hint of spring in the frocking at the opening day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting held at the Makaraka course.

Black, always distinctive, was the most favoured colour, with navy blue and brown as keenly challenging rivals.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the dressing was the almost übiquitous wear of “tailor-mades” in smart tweeds. Ensemble suits were also seen and handsome furs were much in evidence. Felt hats, either matching or contrasting pleasantly with the colour scheme, were, generally speaking, the most popular choice.

A point that deserves more than passing notice is the wonderful evolution of the felt hat. Not so many decades ago a felt hat was considered the correct wear for wet days, but it now stands revealed —gay in colour and varied in shape—as a fitting accompaniment of even the most diaphanous frock.
