SAFEBLOWERS’ HAUL
POST OFFICE BURGLED ! SUM OF £IBO TAKEN (Per Tress Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Yesterday, the Dunedin police received advice that the safe in the Waitahnna Post Office had been blown open on Thursday night and approximately £IBO stolen. The money, which was in notes, was a remittance which had been forwarded from Dunedin for the payment of pensions in the district. , Entry to the office was effected by the breaking of a window at the rear of the building and it was not until yesterday morning that the assistant I postmaster, when he opened the jj office, discovered that anything was I amiss. The door of the safe was blown ('from its hinges and the explosion, J although its force had been broken I somewhat by some mats from the ■ floor, caused considerable damage to I the fittings and furniture of the room. I The nearest residence to the buildJ mg is about 50 yards away, and it is therefore not surprising that hie ’ noise of the explosion was not heard, more especially as the thieves had placed mats over the safe to muffle the sound and deaden the concussion.
