BEAUTIFYING WORK
WAINUI ROAD SCHEME ASSOCIATION MEETING PLAN TO BE CONSIDERED The question of carrying out improvement work along. Wainui road is to ibe considered toy the Gisborne and District Beautifying Association, according to a recommendation passed at last night’s annual meeting of the society. A proposal was made by Mr. R. Morse that the owners of property fronting on Wainui road (between deLautour road and Wainui Beach should toe approached with a view to obtaining permission to plant flowering trees or shrubs in small corner sections at various points along the rout'e. Mr. Morse pointed out that the run to Wainui was one of the most popular drives with townspeople and there were many acres of land on either side of the highway that did not carry a single tree or shrub. His idea was to obtain the right to fence off tri'angular plots abutting the roadway, using the sutodivisional fences, the land to remain the property of the present owners. Such corner sections could 'be fenced off at small cost and would provide the necessary protection of the plants. Favourable Comment The scheme was commented upon favourably toy several members and it. -was decided unanimously to request the incoming committee -to go into the matter. There was a good attendance at the meeting, and the president, 'Dr. H. Gouldiag Rice, was hi the chair. In moving the adoption of the annual report, already published, and the balance-sheet, the chairman referred to the increased interest that was being taken in the task of beautifying the town. That was evident by the care that was given to street frontages in residential areas, toy the number of requests to the society for assistance in beautifying different streets and by the larger subscription list. Dr. Rice referred to the association’s interest in the Waikanae Bark centennial scheme, and mentioned that the society had decided to devote its street day collection to the fund. He pointed out that there would be much scope for beautifying work in future development -operations, such as the marine drive 'to the W'aipaoa River and Kaiti Hill scheme. The speaker thought that early consideration should be given to the beautifying ef the approach to the town from the aerodrome. The report was seconded 1 by Mr. R. G. Crawford and carried unanimously. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted: — President, Dr, H. Goulding Rice; vicepresidents, Dr. A. L. Singer, Mrs. C. Blackburn, (Mr. D. IS. The matter was deferred' in the meantime. Service Recognised On the motion of the chairman, Mr. O. 'S.
