Government Methods In The Referendum

WELLINGTON, . September 1 (P.A.). —The Wellington District Methodist Synod today after a discussion • on the referendum on compulsory military training passed the following resolution: “While commending the Government for giving the people an opportunity to vote on the issue of compulsory military training, the synod urges upon the Government the need for making adequate financial and publicity provisions for the presentation of both sides of a case when any referendum is to be taken, particularly when the Government intends to take a partisan attitude to the issue involved.” An amendment was moved to delete any reference to commendation of the Government but this was lost.

It was suggested by one member that the synod should protest to the Government about the use of public fundn for the presentation of the case for conscription but nothing was done in this direction.
