OBITUARY Mr Arthur H. Birss
The death occurred early this morning at the Grey Hospital of Mr Arthur Henderson Birss, of Kumara. Born at Invercargill 62 years ago, Mr Birss spent the greater part of his life in Southland where he was engaged in the sawmilling industry. He came to Kumara in 1936 and was manager oi the Greenstone Sawmill until his retirement two years ago owing to failing health. He was a returned sohder from the first World War, being a Ser-geant-Major in the N.Z. Rifle Brigade, Earl of Liverpool’s Own. During the Second World War, he was a Captain in the Guard. He was a member of the Victoria and Masonic Lodge 147, Invercargill, and the 'lnvercargill Foresters Lodge. Mr Birss is survived by his wife and two daughters, Miss Marie and Ann Birss (Kumara), four brothers, John (Invercargill), George (Wyndham), Alexander and Charles (North Island), and one sister Mrs W. Emmerson (Toa, Invercargill). The funeral will take place at the Kumara cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
