FRENCH CABINET’S PROPOSALS LEAD TO REVOLT OF M.P.’s
PARIS, May 19 (Rec. 11.20 a.m.)—• A revolt of Independent and Conservative Ministers who strongly oppose proposals approved by the Cabinet today to meet the 1949 budget deficit, threatens the Queuille Government. The situation is regarded as critical in the lobbies.
The proposals were made by the Finance Minister, M. Petsche, to meet an estimated deficit of £35,000,000 sterling, which is attributed to the continuation of the war in Indo-China and the loss of £21,500,000 on the French nationalised railways. The chief proposals are reported to be cuts in all civil expenditures, army equipment and social security benefits and a tightening of the control of the railways and other’ nationalised industries.
The Prime Minister is expected to try and find compromise to avoid the proposals being defeated when they come before the Assembly next week.
