Seventy-three-year-old veteran of popular seas, the U.S.S. Bear, whose first famous exploit was the rescue of the Greely Arctic Expedition in 1883 and whose last was to tow a Nazi supply ship captured off Greenland into the port of Boston, was bought recently by a Montreal man for working with the seal fleet between Newfoundland and Greenland. When asked why he picked the Bear, and not a new ship, he said the oaksheathed Bear was sturdier than modern ships in heavy pack ice. * & * t *
The formation of a “league” to wage a “ruthless campaign” against an alleged £3,000,000 a year toll of tips and bribes in Scotland is not the first organised effort of its kind north of the Border. In 1760 the Society of Clerks of Edinburgh decided that the tipping evil had become so intolerable that they drew up a “System of Defence,” which forbade their servants to take “vails” or members to tender them, “for. it is destructive of the morals of servants and discreditable to the policy of the kingdom, an interruption of hospitality, and a tax on the hospitality of friends.”
